1. Departure to Kyrgyzstan from Niigata, Japan, and via Irkutsk to Almaty in Kazakhstan (the only way to go in 1993).

2. After an Odyssey of Aeroflot delays, arrival at Almaty Airport, flooded after an unseasonal downpour.

3. Our first taste of Kyrgyz hospitality: tea in a Toyota van replete with a tape recorder playing all too familiar Japanese Enka.
